Description

Fiber Splice Protection Sleeve 60mm – Heat Shrink Fusion Splice Protectors (100pcs/pkt)

A fusion splice is only as good as the protection around it. The glass joint itself may be mechanically strong, but without a proper fiber splice protection sleeve applied over it, that bare splice is exposed to moisture, mechanical stress, and the kind of incidental contact that happens every time a technician works inside a splice tray.

The 60mm heat shrink fiber sleeve is the standard solution — a three-layer tube containing an inner hot-melt adhesive, a stainless steel or ceramic support rod, and an outer heat-shrink jacket that, once shrunk down over the splice, creates a rigid, sealed, moisture-resistant protector around the joint. It is the last thing applied to every fusion splice, and arguably one of the most important. Supplied in convenient 100-piece packets, these are the consumable that every fiber splicing kit in Kenya runs through fastest.

What Is a Fiber Splice Protection Sleeve and Why Is 60mm the Standard?

Every time a fusion splicer joins two fiber ends together, the resulting splice point has no coating or buffer — it is bare glass, typically 125 microns in diameter. The splice itself is strong, but the uncoated section extending either side of it is not. A heat shrink fiber sleeve solves this by encapsulating the entire uncoated section in a protective tube that bonds to the fiber coating on both sides, leaving no exposed glass anywhere along the joint.

The 60mm length is the industry standard for single-fiber splice protection because it comfortably covers the typical 50–55mm of stripped and cleaved fiber that a fusion splicer works with, with enough overlap on the coated fiber on both sides to create a secure, airtight seal.

Shorter sleeves risk insufficient overlap; longer sleeves waste space in the splice tray. At 60mm, the geometry is right for virtually every single-fiber fusion splicing application — which is why it is the format stocked in most FTTH and backbone fiber projects in Kenya. For more on fiber splicing standards, the IEC 61300 series covers mechanical splice and termination requirements for fiber optic components.

Key Features of the 60mm Fusion Splice Protector

  • Three-Layer Construction: Outer heat-shrink tube, inner hot-melt adhesive layer, and a central stainless steel or ceramic support rod — each layer plays a specific role in protecting the splice from mechanical stress, moisture, and bending.
  • 60mm Length — Single Fiber Standard: The correct length for single-fiber fusion splices across singlemode and multimode fiber, providing full coverage of the uncoated splice zone with adequate overlap onto the buffered fiber on both sides.
  • Heat-Shrink Activation: Applied using the heating oven built into any standard fusion splicer — no separate tools required. The sleeve shrinks and bonds to the fiber in under 30 seconds in most splicer models.
  • Moisture and Dust Resistant: Once fully shrunk, the hot-melt adhesive seals both ends of the sleeve against moisture ingress — protecting the splice from condensation and humidity inside splice trays and closures.
  • Compatible with Singlemode and Multimode Fiber: The standard inner diameter accommodates both fiber types, making these sleeves usable across every type of fiber splicing work without needing to stock separate sizes.
  • 100-Piece Packets: Packaged in the quantity that matches real project consumption — enough for a full splice tray run without excessive leftover stock, and easy to track against project material usage.

How to Apply a Heat Shrink Fiber Splice Protection Sleeve

Applying the sleeve correctly takes less than a minute and is one of the most straightforward steps in the fusion splicing process:

  1. Before stripping and cleaving, slide one sleeve onto one of the fiber ends — this step is easy to forget and impossible to fix after splicing.
  2. Complete the fusion splice as normal.
  3. Slide the sleeve carefully over the splice joint, centering it so the support rod sits directly over the bare splice point.
  4. Place the sleeved splice into the fusion splicer’s heating oven.
  5. The oven heats the sleeve until the outer jacket shrinks and the adhesive bonds — typically 20–35 seconds depending on the splicer model.
  6. Remove the protected splice and allow it to cool before placing it in the splice tray.

Why Stock Your Fusion Splice Protectors from ECA Networks Kenya?

Fiber splice protection sleeves are a high-consumption consumable — a busy splicing team working through a 12-core cable will use 12 sleeves before moving to the next joint. Running out on site is not just inconvenient, it means leaving unprotected splices in a closure, which is never acceptable in a professional installation. At ECA Networks, we keep these in stock in 100-piece packets so you can order the quantity your project actually needs — whether that is a single packet for a small job or a bulk order to equip a full FTTH splicing team for an extended rollout.

We supply fiber splicing consumables alongside splice closures, patch cords, PLC splitters, and ADSS cable — everything a fiber contractor needs from a single supplier, without splitting your procurement across multiple vendors. If you are kitting out for a new project or just restocking a depleted splicing kit, get in touch and we will sort you out quickly.
